2014 winter olympics sochi opening ceremonies rings lighting gi Olympics 2014: Russian TV hides Sochi Games opening ceremony mishap with doctored footageWhile we at home in the States and those in the auditorium in Sochi, Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony were witness to a major lighting mishap on Friday (Feb. 7), those watching from home on Russian state television were kept in the dark.

For viewers of the Rossiya 1, the Russian host broadcaster, the five floating snowflakes at the start of the ceremony turned into the Olympic rings and erupted in fireworks. Only that’s not really what happened.

As has been reported, only four of the five expanded into rings and the pyrotechnics never went off. However, Rossiya kept the illusion alive by cutting away to rehearsal footage, broadcasting the union of all five rings and an on-cue fireworks display.

Producers confirm the switch, the AP reports, saying it was important that they preserve the imagery of the Olympic symbols.
