once upon a time season 4 frozen 'Once Upon a Time' Season 4 to tackle 'Frozen': Who will play Elsa? “Once Upon a Time” revealed a major twist in the final moments of the Season 3 finale on Sunday (May 11): “Frozen” is coming to Storybrooke!

Or rather, more accurately, Elsa from “Frozen” is already in Storybrooke. After being trapped in Rumpelstiltskin’s vault for who knows how long, Elsa was pulled from the past into the present when Emma and Hook made their way back to the right time via a portal. After the brief glance at the back of the icy queen’s head, fans were wondering what her arrival in Storybrooke means for Season 4 of the ABC fairytale drama.

“Once Upon a Time” executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis reveal to EW that Elsa won’t be a black-and-white villain. “What we loved so much about Elsa was she was perceived to be a villain, but of course we understood she was misunderstood,” Kitsis says. “And the only one who understood that was her sister. That was a very thematic thing for us, which is a misunderstood character who everyone perceives to be bad.”

And Elsa may not be the only “Frozen” character coming to Storybrooke. “We’d be disappointed if Elsa was the only one we saw, but we’re not quite ready yet to tell you who else we may encounter,” Horowitz says. “We do enjoy Olaf.”

And as for world-jumping to the universe that “Frozen” is set in … “As always on the show, we like to show you different worlds,” Kitsis says. “I would be let down if we don’t get to see Arendelle.”

The showrunners reveal that viewers will also get to see the backstory of how Elsa ended up trapped in Rumpel’s vault in the first place. “You know, there’s a backstory to how she appeared in Rumpel’s vault, and what she’s up to now when she’s walking out of that farmhouse that we’ll get into very quickly, most likely in the premiere,” Horowitz says. “And in doing so, we very much want to honor what came in the movie. We’re not trying to redefine the character; what we’re trying to do is take this beloved character and fit her into our world.”

So the big question of the day: Who will take on the role of Elsa that was made so famous by the one and only Idina Menzel? “We have an offer out to Adele Dazeem to play Elsa,” Horowitz jokes.

But in all seriousness, both Horowitz and Kitsis are taking some vacation time before they think about casting the newest Disney character on the ABC drama, so Zap2it is being extra helpful and cast the role for them! You’re welcome, guys.

If Idina Menzel can’t reprise her role as the ice queen, how about Megan Hilty? The blonde beauty can clearly sing — moment of silence for “Smash,” ladies and gentlemen — plus, she’s got the looks too. On the NBC broadway series, Hilty was able to portray the villain one moment and the empathetic hero or damsel in distress the next. That range is necessary to portray the “misunderstood” Elsa that Horwitz and Kitsis want to show.
