He maintains he shot her because he thought she was an intruder in his home in South Africa at approximately 3 a.m. local time Thursday, Feb. 14.

However, a South African newspaper is painting a different story.

City Press reports that central to the investigation is a “bloodied cricket bat,” which police are looking at via three scenarios — that Pistorius used it to assault Steenkamp, that Steenkamp used the bat in self-defense against Pistorius, or that Pistorius used it to break down the bathroom door behind which Steenkamp was hiding.

The newspaper also reports that Steenkamp’s skull was “crushed” and that investigators are running blood tests to determine whose blood was on the bat.

“Today” adds that Pistorius was known to keep a cricket bat by his bed because he had grown paranoid about home invasion, living in a luxury home in the increasingly crime-ridden country.

The “Today” correspondent also says, “We know that when Oscar Pistorius was carrying his girlfriend down the stairs after he allegedly shot her three times in a very confined space, a little bathroom stall upstairs, that her heart was still beating.”

“He says he was desperately trying to save her. That’s what he’s told family and friends,” the correspondent continues. “But the forensics suggest that when he shot her, she was in a very confined space. She could not possibly have got away. What will be crucial for him is convincing a court that he had no idea that it was in fact her inside that bathroom stall, that he reasonably believed that it was an intruder.”

“Problematic for him however, is consistent witness evidence from the residents who live in that complex is that they heard the shouts of screaming and argument in the moments before the shooting and three or four shots fired in very close succession.”

Pistorius is currently being held in a local police station in Pretoria, South Africa.
