As was expected after police wrapped up their investigation last week, South African Olympic runner Oscar Pistorius has been indicted on charges of murder and illegal possession of ammunition in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a South African model, last February, reports the AP.
Pistorius has long claimed that he thought Steenkamp was an intruder in his home when he shot her through a locked bathroom door in the early hours of the morning on Valentine’s Day. Prosecutors allege that the crime was premeditated, which carries a minimum of 25 years in prison if Pistorius is convicted.
Pistorius’ lawyers want the charge reduced to culpable homicide. The trial date has been set for March 3, 2014 and will be presided over by a judge, since in South Africa the justice system does not conduct trials by jury.
