michelle obama oscars 2013 gi Oscars 2013: Michelle Obama is Jack Nicholson's Best Picture co presenterNot that Jack Nicholson ever needs assistance, but he certainly got it at a very high level in presenting the final award at the 85th Academy Awards.

As the three-time Oscar winner took the stage to present the award for best picture just as Sunday (Feb. 24) became Monday (Feb. 25) on the East Coast, he turned to a video screen overhead to welcome First Lady Michelle Obama to the proceedings, via remote from the White House.

At the end of a big media week for the current matriarch of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave — supposedly capped by her gone-viral “mom-dancing” display with the host of NBC’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” — she spoke about the nine nominated films’ demonstration that “love can endure against all obstacles.”

Surrounded by several formally dressed U.S. servicemen and servicewomen, she also praised the talents involved in those movies for helping to fuel young people’s interest in the arts. And she thanked all of those in attendance at Hollywood’s Nokia Theatre for doing what they do professionally.

Mrs. Obama then handed it back to Nicholson to announce the titles, but the teamwork wasn’t over yet. He sent it back to Washington, D.C. so she could open the envelope (imagine that journey for the accountants) containing the name of the winner: director Ben Affleck’s “Argo.”

And thus marked the end of the First Lady’s involvement, but that was OK. Her mission for the evening was complete.
