battleship poster taylor kitsch Peter Berg: 'Battleship' failed because it was 'without a big star'

“Battleship,” by all definitions of the term, was a box office failure. The movie cost $209 million to make and only grossed $65 million in the United States, barely earning back its production costs worldwide.

Now director Peter Berg is aiming for his comeback in the Navy SEAL story “Lone Survivor,” which he made for a much smaller budget. In a new interview with The New York Times Magazine, Berg admits he hopes it will “buy back [his] reputation.”

“I felt I had a new understanding of what went into making a blockbuster,” says Berg. “I got a taste of a film’s global power. But I discounted the effect of Will Smith on ‘Hancock’s’ success. I thought I could pull off ‘Battleship’ without a big star.”

Sorry about that, Taylor Kitsch. The actor had worked with Berg on “Friday Night Lights,” so it’s no surprise that the pair teamed up again. But for Kitsch, “Battleship” was the second of his big major box office flops in 2012, the first of which was “John Carter.” His blockbuster days seem to be over for the time being, though he is starring in Berg’s “Lone Survivor.” This time, however, the movie has the combined star power of Mark Wahlberg, Emile Hirsch and Eric Bana to help it not sink.
