Pope Francis is a fan of Marxism, according to conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh. This comes in response to the Catholic Pope’s message to world leaders that poverty was a bad thing that needed to be fought.

In the world of Limbaugh, this makes the Pope a Communist.

The rant against the Pope came as part of Limbaugh’s radio show on Monday (Dec. 2). It seems that the host had heard about how Francis had released a document in which he denounced poverty and inequality while calling on the Catholic church and other leaders to focus less on money.

Alas, this document also mentioned the tyranny of “unfettered capitalism.” And you don’t attack capitalism on Rush Limbaugh’s watch.

In the mind of the pundit, a Pope who says such things is either a) being manipulated by the shadowy forces of world liberalism (by which Limbaugh apparently means the Democrats) or b) a closet Communist. The fact that a religious leader could never be a devoted Marxist — a philosophical theory that explicitly rejects religion — doesn’t get much mention. The first idea is much more fun for Limbaugh though.

“This is just pure Marxism coming out of the mouth of the pope,” Limbaugh explained on his show. “Unfettered capitalism? That doesn’t exist anywhere. Unfettered capitalism is a liberal socialist phrase to describe the United States.”

Thus, the Pope hates the United States.

If Pope Francis is not, however, a closet Marxist with a seething hatred of the USA, then this is obviously a translation or an influence issue by the forces of Communism disguised as everyone who is not an extreme conservative. “Communism today, in large part, is the Democrat Party,” Limbaugh said. “Communism today is in large part the feminist movement. Communism today is found in most of the AFL-CIO-type unions … This is exactly what the left does. If they had a chance to take somebody as influential and revered and beloved as the pope and put their words in his mouth, they would do it in a minute.”

Back in the real world, it’s probably safe to say that the highest earthly authority is neither a Communist nor a puppet of some fictional liberal plot.
