jj abrams valve half life portal movie 'Portal' or 'Half Life' movie on the way: J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell team up

In a match made in nerd heaven, J.J. Abrams and Gabe Newell announced at the DICE Summit that Bad Robot and Valve are joining forces to create video games and films together.

“There’s an idea we have for a game that we’d like to work with Valve on,” Abrams told the crowd, as reported by Wired. Even more exciting: Newell added, “We’re going to figure out if we can make a ‘Portal’ movie or ‘Half-Life’ movie together.”

Abrams confirmed the film news to Polygon after the keynote, saying, “It’s as real as anything in Hollywood ever gets, which is that we are really talking to Valve, we are going to be bringing on a writer, we have a lot of very interesting ideas.”

“Portal” and “Half-Life” are two of Valve’s most popular franchises, with fans clamoring for a long hoped for — and never confirmed — “Half-Life 3.” The idea of a film based on either of these series is very exciting, especially with a creator like Abrams working on them. On the flip side, the idea of Abrams working with Valve to create a game is also something very much worth looking forward to.

The surprise announcement came after Abrams and Newell gave a joint DICE keynote speech called “Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?” Hopefully more news about this collaboration will be revealed in the coming year.
