preakness stakes orb triple crown oxbow wins gi Preakness Stakes 2013 results: Orb won't get a Triple Crown as Oxbow wins the race

The hopes for a Triple Crown horse this year were dashed when Kentucky Derby winner and heavy favorite, Orb, placed fourth in the 138th Preakness Stakes. Another horse, Oxbow, took the win.

Going into the race, Orb, ridden by jockey Joel Rosario, was the favorite to win by a lot — right before the Stakes, bookmakers were offering only 3-5 odds on Orb to win. The actual winner, meanwhile, was pretty much a long-shot. Anyone betting on Oxbow got to take advantage of 15-1 odds.

But Oxbow did win. The horse, with jockey Gary Stevens (a three-time Preakness winner himself), took an early lead in the race, pulling ahead of Golden Cents by the first turn. Oxbow only increased that lead for the rest of the run, never allowing another to pass from that point onward.

When the race was over, the standings were as follows:

1st — Oxbow
2nd — It’s My Lucky Day
3rd — MyLute
4th — Orb

It has been 35 years since the last Triple Crown winner. The last horse to do it was Affirmed, who won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes back in 1978. Seattle Slew (in 1977) and Secretariat (1973) had done the same in that decade. With two different winners for the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 2013, it will be at least one more year before the feat is repeated.
