The “Pretty Little Liars” executive producers have revealed the Alfred Hitchcock movie they’re doing an homage to in the Season 3 finale — after visiting “Vertigo” in Season 1 and “Psycho” in Season 2.
Marlene King tells Zap2it the incorporation of “North by Northwest” turned out to be even easier than they thought.
“Watch the movie. I think if fans pay attention to the journey that we’re taking this year, and the things I’ve said about the journey that we’re taking this year, you’ll have several clues about how ‘North By Northwest’ is incorporated. It worked beautifully, actually,” says King.
We’ve seen “North by Northwest” and we’re wondering who the PLL version of Roger O. Thornhill is. In NBN, Cary Grant is advertising executive Thornhill who gets trapped in a whirlwind, dangerous case of mistaken identity. He ultimately winds up dealing with foreign spies, battling it out atop Mount Rushmore and falling in love.
So who is Thornhill in the Liarsverse? Is it Toby (Keegan Allen), who perhaps is not the bad guy we’re all thinking he is after the summer finale reveal that he’s on the “A” team? Is it Mona (Janel Parrish), who is trying to realign her life after her breakdown as mini-“A”? Could it be someone else?
Regardless of who it turns out to be, King assures us that the finale is not lacking in surprises and twists.
“Going into the finale of Season 3B, as much as I tried to not worry about it, because I wrote that episode, [having a twist] was definitely on my mind,” says King. “[Toby] was a shocking revelation, so how do we come up with a finale that feels as big as that, and also satisfying? I think we have. It’s a really fun, kick-a** finale.”
“Pretty Little Liars” airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
