pretty little liars finale church 'Pretty Little Liars' season finale: The Hitchcock connectionI. Marlene King, one of the executive producers of “Pretty Little Liars,” recently told Zap2it that the season finale would be very Hitchcockian. “The jeopardy that one of the Liars gets into at the end of the finale is sort of our big Hitchcock piece,” says King.

“Hitchcock” is a reference to Oscar-nominated film director Alfred Hitchcock, known for his thrillers such as “Rear Window,” “Strangers on a Train” and “To Catch a Thief.” So what was the Hitchcock connection in the Season 1 finale?

The finale was titled “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and the big climax with Spencer (Troian Bellisario) took place in none other than a bell tower, where luckily it was Ian and not Spencer who fell. It was an homage to one of Hitchcock’s most famous films, “Vertigo,” where Kim Novak‘s Madeleine Elster takes a header off a bell tower while Jimmy Stewart‘s Det. Ferguson stands by, unable to save her.

King also told TV Guide that the writers hope to “try to do [a Hitchcock homage] for every finale.” If they can pull it off, they’re retroactively covered for the summer 2010 finale. In that finale, Ashley Marin (Laura Leighton) stole money from a client of the bank where she works. Guess who else did that? Janet Leigh‘s Marion Crane in “Psycho.”

We hope the show continues the Hitchcock theme with finales – he had many great movies to pull from. We doubt they could have a finale take place in a “Lifeboat,” but maybe next they can try having a finale be (or appear to be) one continuous shot, a la the 1948 Hitchcock movie “Rope.”

What did you think, “Liars” fans?
