prince philip hospitalized 2013 queen elizabeth Prince Philip hospitalized; Queen Elizabeth's husband to have exploratory surgeryQueen Elizabeth II‘s husband Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was admitted to the hospital Thursday (June 6) for a planned operation, Buckingham Palace has announced. He is expected to be at the London Clinic for two weeks after he undergoes “an exploratory operation following abdominal investigations,” says the palace.

The hospitalization was not an emergency, just part of the ongoing process in the monarch’s health struggles. Philip turns 92 on Monday, but that hasn’t slowed down his social calendar. He attended a garden party with the Queen earlier Thursday, looking smart in a top hat and tails (pictured, right).

Palace officials say there will be regular updates on Philip’s condition.

The Duke has been hospitalized several times in the past few years, most recently in June 2012 for a bladder infection and August 2012 as a “precautionary measure.”

The Queen and Duke have been together since 1947, though they met several years earlier when she was just 13 and he was a naval cadet. They became engaged when she turned of age following World War II.
