The 85th Academy Awards are making history more than a month before the ceremony even takes place. Quvenzhane Wallis and Emmanuelle Riva are both the youngest and oldest actresses ever to make it into the Best Actress nomination pool at the Oscars.

“Beasts of the Southern Wild” is 9-year-old Wallis’ first film role. She was only 5 when she auditioned for the part, and has been nominated for and won several awards already for her portrayal of Hushpuppy. The previous record holder for youngest Best Actress nominee was Keisha Castle-Hughes, who was up for “Whale Rider” at age 13.

On the opposite side of the spectrum is Riva, who turns 86 on Oscar night. The French actress is a veteran of the film industry, and has been nominated for two BAFTAs. This is her first Oscar nomination.

Both women are up against some pretty stiff competition this year. Also nominated for Best Actress are Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts. The Oscars are slated to take place on Feb. 24.
