Country singer Randy Travis is currently in critical condition in a Texas hospital. According to his representatives, the 54-year-old is suffering from complications from viral cardiomyopathy, a condition caused by a viral infection of the heart.

Travis was hospitalized on July 7. The musician has had a history of alcohol abuse problems, but it’s unclear if this condition is related to those in any way.

A country and gospel star who began his career in 1978, Travis has recorded more than 20 studio albums, received seven Grammy Awards and had 16 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. In addition to being known for his songs “Three Wooden Crosses,” “Diggin’ Up Bones,” “Forever and Ever, Amen” and “Deeper Than the Holler,” he acted in films like “The Rainmaker” and television series’ like “Touched by an Angel.”
