ray donovan season 2 tca panel 'Ray Donovan': Liev Schreiber 'underestimated how difficult it would be' acting while directing A lot of TV stars take turns behind the camera on their own shows. So when Liev Schreiber decided to direct an episode of Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” while also starring in the episode, he didn’t think it would be too difficult.

“It was really intense,” Schreiber says during the 2014 Summer TV Press Tour on Friday (July 18). “I underestimated how difficult it would be to be acting while I was directing. But I was very pleased with the whole experience.”

Here’s what else the cast and showrunners have to say during the “Ray Donovan” panel:

– Jon Voight’s Mickey is going to continue to be a complicated character. “That’s what we like about him,” executive producer Ann Biderman says. “He’s dangerous and I’m mindful of keeping him dangerous. He’s also human and loves his family, truly.”

Voight enjoys portraying that balance between dangerous and sincere. “He’s a danger to the family. Ray is right,” Voight says. “But he loves his family too. You have that complex mix going on.”

– Guest star Hank Azaria was in attendance for the panel as well, and revealed that he was a fan of the show before he was cast on it and enjoys how every single character, including his own, is not just black and white, good or bad. “Nobody is one thing and every character no matter how big or small gets to portray that in a variety of ways,” Azaria says. “It was fun to really tease that out. Everyone is many shades of grey and this character is no exception.”

– Voight’s love interest, Mickey’s ex Claudette, is played by Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Voight couldn’t stop singing her praises during the panel. “Sheryl Lee has this dignity that we’re all impressed with on the show,” Voight says. “There’s something regal about her. It makes me feel, as Mickey and as Jon, very proud. I’m dating a queen.”

“Ray Donovan” airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.
