ringer upfronts 320 'Ringer': Move to The CW from CBS came together quicklyThe CW’s pickup of “Ringer” — which was originally developed by and for CBS — took a lot of people by surprise last week. It wasn’t exactly part of The CW’s master plan either.

Incoming network head Mark Pedowitz says conversations about “Ringer” between CBS and The CW only in “the last couple weeks.” CBS was pretty high on the show, which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar in the dual role of twin sisters hiding dark secrets, but didn’t think there would be room for it on the schedule, so talks started.

“We’d been hearing about ‘Ringer’ from several CBS people, because it so much looks like a CW show,” current CW Entertainment president Dawn Ostroff says (she’s stepping down next month, at which point Pedowitz will take over). “… One of the things we loved about ‘Ringer’ is having someone like Sarah Michelle Gellar on The CW. For us it’s always great when we have somebody on the network who can help us market a show and sell a show. We’ve seen it already because the Internet is abuzz about her coming to The CW. It’s a real leg up for us.”

Ostroff and Pedowitz acknowledge that “Ringer” might skew a little older than most of the network’s other shows — at 34, Gellar is the oldest lead actor or actress on a CW series — but they also say it was too good not to pick up.

“The show is almost a film-noir show, which is reminiscent of ‘Veronica Mars’ without it being so young,” Ostroff says. “It’s a little older, but it’s really in that sort of tone. When we saw the show, we loved it.”

Adds Pedowitz: “It fit right in our wheelhouse. It was a real opportunity to have Sarah on our air. We thought it was development that really worked for us, so we’re thrilled. And it broadens us a little bit.”

“Ringer” will air at 9 p.m. ET Tuesdays on The CW next season.
