Boston mayor Thomas Menino, the Boston Herald, and WWE stars like Steve Austin are the latest to attack Rolling Stone magazine’s choice to feature Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev on its Aug. 3 cover.
Menino sent a letter to the magazine’s publisher that claims the Rolling Stone cover “rewards a terrorist with celebrity treatment” and “reaffirms a terrible message that destruction gains fame for killers and their ’causes.'” An image showing the full text of the letter is making its rounds on social media, and can be seen below.
Meanwhile, the Boston Herald’s July 18 cover features the Rolling Stone image with a big red “X” across it, and next to it the headline: “Dumb As A Rock.”
While Rolling Stone’s bewildering depiction of a sexy rock star-looking Tsarnaev has sparked public outcry on social media, many retailers have opted not to sell this issue of the mag. Drugstore chain CVS says in a statement, “As a company with deep roots in New England and a strong presence in Boston, we believe this is the right decision out of respect for the victims of the attack and their loved ones.”
“Stone Cold” Steve Austin and his WWE wrestling buddies are some of the latest to get in on the Rolling Stone bashing via Twitter. Austin tweets, “The rolling stone cover was tasteless, worthless, pathetic, and unAmerican. SMH…WTF. Stick your magazine up your a**.” While wrestler Sweet T tweeted an alternate cover suggestion that features bombing victims with the headline, “Boston Strong.”
Other celebs to call out Rolling Stone include “White House Down” star James Woods, who went on an F-bomb-laced Twitter tirade against “these money hungry scum,” and called for a boycott of the magazine.
