NBA teams need not fear the tenacious defense and periodic erratic behavior of Ron Artest anymore. Now they’ll need to fear the tenacious defense and periodic erratic behavior of Metta World Peace.
The NBA champ is officially changing his name Friday (Sept. 16) according to CNN.
His publicist says, “Metta is his official first name; which in the Buddhist tradition means loving-kindness and friendliness toward others and his last name is World Peace.”
Artest was scheduled to change his name in August, but the process was held up due to outstanding parking tickets.
The irony Artest’s new name is not lost on NBA fans. It is Artest who was a main player in the infamous “Malice at the Palace” in which the 6’7″ forward ran into the stands during a game between Indiana and Detroit and started punching fans. For these actions, he was suspended for 86 games and lost approximately $7 million.
A much calmer Artest/World Peace is set to participate the ABC program “Dancing with the Stars.”
