russell brand fx getty Russell Brand comes to FX for late night specialsFX has joined forces with Russell Brand and will make a foray into late-night TV with him in 2012.

The cable channel has sealed a deal with the comedian/actor/Katy Perry husband for six half-hour, late-night specials that will debut in the spring. The shows will feature Brand performing in front of and interacting with a live audience, but it sounds less like a traditional talk show than a series of current events-driven comedy gigs.

“We look forward to supporting Russell and his partner Troy Miller‘s [‘Flight of the Conchords,’ ‘Bored to Death’] ambition to strip down the hosted comedy format to its most fundamental elements and to create something daring and unfiltered for the FX audience,” says Nick Grad, FX’s head of original programming.

As for Brand? “I am so excited I’m on the point of climax. In fact I will put the ‘O’ into FX, which spells FOX, which is actually the channel’s real name,” he says. “That’s the only thing that worries me about all this, to be honest. At least I’ll be able to have a Christmas drink with Bill O’Reilly.”

The FX deal is the second Brand has made this week with a News Corp. entity. He’s also developing an animated series for 20th Century Fox TV with “Sarah Silverman Program” writers Rich Rinaldi and Dan Fybel.

Brand’s next movie is “Rock of Ages,” which is scheduled for release in June.
