“It’s kind of spooky,” she tells Zap2it on a March visit to the show’s Louisiana set. “I didn’t know that I would feel that way until I was actually doing it.”

She explains that after looking up one of her character’s spells and realizing it was an actual incantation, she decided to protect herself anyway. “One of my incantations is a real incantation about raising the dead, reanimating the dead. The words, I Googled them, and it’s a real spell,” she says.

Since she’s saying the words with intent — she is acting, after all — her hairstylist gave her a protective bracelet that she wore in a unique way while she did the scene. “I don’t really believe in that stuff, but I thought better safe than sorry,” she says. “[I was] covering my bases. i don’t want to take any dead people home with me!”

“Salem” premieres Sunday (April 20) at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. CT on WGN America.
