Heaney, who died in a Dublin hospital after a brief illness, according to a statement issued on behalf of his family, was one of four Irish poets to win the Nobel prize for literature. His peers include William Butler Yeats, Samuel Beckett and George Bernard Shaw.

Heaney’s final collection of poems, “Human Chain,” was published in 2010. A year later, he donated the files of his life’s work to the National Library of Ireland, including all written and typed manuscripts and revisions from 1963 to 2010.

At one of his final public appearances this month at an event in celebration of Yeats, Heaney described “Human Chain” as “my last book,” before letting out a chuckle and correcting himself with “my latest collection.”

Heaney is survived by his wife, Marie, and children Christopher, Michael and Catherine.
