The visually-impressive first trailer for Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” delivers on what’s being hyped as a possible year-end crowdpleaser and awards contender. Stiller both directs and stars in an update of James Thurber’s story about a shy office drone who escapes into an elaborate fantasy world inside his mind.
Thurber’s story previously inspired a 1947 movie starring Danny Kaye, and now Stiller has made it his first directorial effort since 2008’s “Tropic Thunder.”
Although the trailer is short on plot detail — instead using Of Monsters and Men’s song “Dirty Paws” to drive the action — we do get glimpses of co-stars Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott and Sean Penn. Shirley MacLaine and Kathryn Hahn are also in the cast of the movie due for wide release on Christmas Day.
