star trek 3 jj abrams zachary quinto gi 'Star Trek 3' to start filming in 2014 with J.J. Abrams, says Zachary Quinto

When J.J. Abrams signed up to direct “Star Wars: Episode VII,” many wondered about the fate of his “Star Trek” franchise. Considering the success of “Star Trek Into Darkness” earlier this year, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to learn that a third “Star Trek” movie is indeed in the works.

According to a BuzzHub report on a public interview that Zachary Quinto held at 2013 Galway Film Fleadh, Quinto says that “Star Trek 3” is not only happening, but that Abrams is going to direct it. That’s news to many who thought someone new would take over so Abrams could focus on “Star Wars.” Of course, his involvement and that filming start date could change at any point in time, but it’s interesting to know that Paramount Pictures does seemingly plan to move forward with the franchise — and that Abrams will likely be finished with “Star Wars: Episode VII” by the time he starts with “Star Trek 3” if the former will be completed by its planned release date.

“‘Star Trek 3’ should be filming, I suppose, next year,” Quinto is reported as saying at the event. “It’s going to be made a lot quicker than the last one. That’s the plan, although nothing is confirmed yet.”

“Star Wars: Episode VII” is slated for a Summer 2015 release. No word yet on when “Star Trek 3” could hit theaters.
