tca the chair panel zach quinto 'The Chair': Zachary Quinto calls the Starz filmmaking experiment 'a documentation rather than manipulation' Starz’s first original unscripted series, “The Chair,” is a combination of a filmmaking experiment and a documentary.

Created by “Project Greenlight’s” executive producer Chris Moore, “The Chair” follows two first-time directors as they direct their own, different films adapted from the same screenplay. After both films have been released theatrically and on Starz, one will win a $250,000 prize.

Moore took to the stage at the 2014 Summer TV Press Tour on Friday (July 11) along with the two directors, YouTube star Shane Dawson and filmmaker Anna Martemucci, and mentor Zachary Quinto to discuss the process of making the two movies and what the series will actually show when it premieres in September.

Quinto was very adamant about how “The Chair” was truly documenting the filmmaking process of both directors and everything shown will be authentic.

“I had a certain level of skepticism about involving myself in a documentary series,” Quinto says. “But I think the thing I recognized is that this show was made with a certain level of creative integrity and it truly is a documentation rather than manipulation. I think Anna and Shane can both attest to that as the filmmakers. We stayed out of the way. We captured stuff and we tell the story and show what actually happened rather than trying to make things happen.”

Quinto believes that there was no need for behind-the-scenes interference, anyways. “I think the process of making a film for any director let alone a first time director is dramatic enough in and of itself,” Quinto says. “There were certainly ups and downs, none of them created by us. They just existed and these guys responded to them. We captured it all.”

“The Chair” premieres Saturday, Sept. 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Starz.
