king mellencamp gi Stephen King, John Mellencamp collaborating on musicalRest assured. As far as we know, there are no acrobatics involved in the musical cooked up by master of the macabre Stephen King and roots rocker John Mellencamp.

The pair have teamed up to create “Ghost Brothers of Darkland County,” which the Alliance Theater — the Atlanta theater that will stage the production — describes as “a riveting Southern gothic musical.”

The story is based on the 1957 mysterious deaths of two brothers and a young girl:

In the tiny town of Lake Belle Reve, Mississippi in 1957, a terrible tragedy took the lives of two brothers and a beautiful young girl. During the next forty years, the events of that night became the stuff of local legend. But legend is often just another word for lie. Joe McCandless knows what really happened; he saw it all. The question is whether or not he can bring himself to tell the truth in time to save his own troubled sons, and whether the ghosts left behind by an act of violence will help him – or tear the McCandless family apart forever.

T. Bone Burnett is also involved as musical director, so we’re starting to get little tingles of anticipation. But, since the production won’t make it to the stage until spring 2012, King, Mellencamp and Burnett have plenty of time to glean lessons from the current reigning best Southern gothic musical ever:

Can’t you hear me yell-a
You’re putting me through hell-a
