Though The Master was rumored back in March to be making a return to “Doctor Who” in Season 8, that’s not going to happen. Showrunner Steven Moffat cleared that up during a Q&A at the show’s London premiere.
When asked if The Master will be coming back, Moffat replies (via Den of Geek), “No, not really. I think the story’s sort of done. I thought what Russell [T. Davies] did with that was so brilliant, because I did think it was over.”
He continues, “Once you’d lost Roger Delgado who was so brilliant [as the first Master], it was tough to keep it … it’s like Moriarty in ‘Sherlock’ — yes, I know — you think, ‘you’re a great master villain, you know what you do a lot, you lose! You’re always tremendously confident and then you’re humiliatingly defeated and you don’t remember that the next time you pop up with your ridiculous plan’. So no, the Doctor doesn’t really need an arch-enemy, so we’ll go for new ones. So, sorry John Simm.”
That doesn’t mean other iconic villains from the series won’t return, though. A teaser for the new season makes it looks like Dalek creator Davros will appear, while set photos have shown the Cybermen will be back. “Doctor Who” Season 8 premieres Saturday, Aug. 23, on BBC America.
