miss america nina davuluri getty Student suspended for asking Miss America Nina Davuluri to promIt’s become a trend in recent years for various “civilians” to find ways to ask celebrities to go as their dates for formal dances. It generally turns out sweetly, like when Taylor Swift said yes to taking a cancer survivor to prom (they ended up going to the ACMs because she couldn’t make it) or when Justin Timberlake accompanied a woman to her Marine ball.

It won’t, however, have the same outcome for Patrick Farves, an 18-year-old Pennsylvania high school student who took it upon himself to hijack a question-and-answer session with Miss America Nina Davuluri and ask the beauty queen to prom.

The Associated Press reports that school officials at Central York High School heard about Farves’ plan in advance and warned him not to do it, so when Farves went through with asking Davuluri to prom and then coming up on stage with a plastic flower, he was disciplined the way any other student would be disciplined for breaking the rules, according to officials. Farves received three days in-school suspension. He has since apologized for disrupting the event.

Davuluri’s Q&A was to talk to the students about the importance of science, technology, math and engineering studies. Her platform also includes celebrating diversity through cultural competency.
