With Robert Downey Jr.‘s contract with Marvel Studios up, there’s been some concern that he won’t reprise his role as Iron Man in the upcoming ensemble Marvel superhero movie “The Avengers 2.” Fortunately the film’s director, Joss Whedon, doesn’t have any doubts about whether or not RDJ will get back in the suit again.

“He is Iron Man. He is Iron Man in the way that Sean Connery was James Bond. I have no intention of making ‘Avengers 2’ without him, nor do I think I’ll be called upon to do that,” Whedon tells The Daily Beast. “I don’t think it’s in my interest, Marvel’s interest, or his interest, and I think everything will be fine.”

With that being said, Whedon cautions, “I know that this is Hollywood and you roll with things. You have to be ready for the unexpected. But I loved working with Robert, and everybody knows he embodied that role in a way no one else can. The day he was cast, I went up to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin Feige and said, “You brilliant son of a bi***.”

Thus far, the cast for “The Avengers 2” hasn’t been set in stone. Downey talked about his fate with the franchise during the “Iron Man 3” press conference in Los Angeles.

“In all earnestness, things are very much in flux right now and Marvel has their plans, and we’re all living and growing and we’ll see what happens,” he said.

“The Avengers 2” is due in theaters on May 1, 2015.
