cynthia nixon laura linney gi 320 'The Big C': Laura Linney is glad for another C Cynthia (Nixon)If Laura Linney already was happy to be doing “The Big C,” she got even happier when Cynthia Nixon came on board last week.

The two Emmy winners team up for the first time on the seriocomic Showtime series that premieres Monday, Aug. 16. Linney stars as a wife, mother and teacher with a complicated personal life — and cancer — while “Sex and the City” alum Nixon will enter at the first season’s midpoint as a former college roommate who suddenly reappears.

“Cynthia came in for our first [joint] table read last week,” Linney tells Zap2it, “and we are so excited. She and I have known each other for many, many years … not well, but you know of each other, you see each other backstage and you root for each other.

“For anyone who grew up in Manhattan when I did, Cynthia is a huge legend, particularly within the theatrical community,” adds Linney, recently Tony-nominated for “Time Stands Still.” She recalls Nixon “was doing ‘Hurlyburly’ and ‘The Real Thing’ at the same time, and she would go back-and-forth. For all us theater geeks, she was royalty. (Writer-producer) Jenny Bicks is our show runner, and she was part of `Sex and the City,’ too — so there’s also that connection.”

Viewers also can get a big dose of Linney this holiday weekend. HBO offers an encore of the entire 2008 miniseries “John Adams,” which earned Linney one of her three Emmys to date, Saturday (July 3) into Sunday (July 4).

“I knew when I was making it that I probably never would experience anything like that again,” Linney reflects of playing Abigail Adams. “I’ve never felt so supported, creatively or fiscally. HBO was extraordinary during that entire experience, and I loved it. And I’m extremely proud of it.”
