the girlfriend experience starz anthology series 'The Girlfriend Experience': Starz orders Steven Soderbergh's anthology series Starz just asked Steven Soderbergh to go steady.

On Monday (June 23), the network ordered Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience” anthology series based on his movie of the same name.

The 13-part series will be executive produced by Soderbergh and Philip Fleishman as well as independent filmmakers Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz.

If you didn’t get a chance to see the 2009 Sundance Film Festival movie on which the new series is based, here’s the gist: “The Girlfriend Experience” dives deep into a culture where people can hire their own girlfriend. More than just a sexual relationship, these “exclusive courtesans” provide clients with intimate, emotional experiences — for an extremely high price, of course.

“Many of these women are extremely accomplished,” Fleishman says. “They range from musicians in major orchestras to PhD candidates in the sciences and often feel empowered by the control and economic freedom their work as GFE’s affords them. The question is whether they define a new genus of contemporary relationship, or have relationships always been transactionally based in one form or another?”

“We are all such fans of the movie that the idea of exploring this world through many different characters, voices and points of view was especially intriguing,” Chris Albrecht, CEO of Starz, says. “Steven and Philip’s approach to the format is unique and not something seen on the entertainment landscape today. Working with Steven is always a thrill, and we are excited to break the mold with this project yet again.”
