the goldbergs cast tcas 'The Goldbergs': The 1980s are 'in the background. It's about the family'One of ABC’s new family comedies coming to their network this fall is “The Goldbergs,” which features on-screen Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone) chronicling his family’s life with his giant VHS camcorder. Off-screen Adam Goldberg, the creator, says that this autobiographical look at his family has his relatives fairly excited.

“They’re excited. It’s a nice homage to us growing up,” says Goldberg. “My mom is the
most excited, this just validated everything she ever did.”

Executive producer Doug Robinson adds, “What’s old becomes new again, all the themes become relevant. Every 25 years, people are ready to look back,” referring to the show being set in the 1980s.

The 1980s are when the show is set, but star Jeff Garlin says that the time period is not the focus of the show.

“I don’t pay much attention to it, I mostly just want to learn my lines and not bump into the furniture,” says Garlin. “I dig our show because the ’80s is in the background. It’s about the family. … The reason I’m on the show is because it’s real and it’s funny
and I love the writing. … [Adam Goldberg] and the writers that we have are
great and they’re doing a great job to create a show that’s soulful and
it’s real.”

However, one thing from the 1980s you can look forward to a lot is the ’80s music. Robinson assures us, “We plan on using a lot of it. It sets the mood of the era, it brings out the emotion of the show. We’re going to do it in every episode.”

“The Goldbergs” premieres Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
