Woody Harrelson has landed the highly coveted role of Haymitch Abernathy in Lionsgate’s big-screen adaption of “The Hunger Games,” THR reports. Haymitch is Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) mentor for the 74th Hunger Games.
In the novel by Suzanne Collins, Haymitch is described as a “paunchy, middle-aged man” who won the 50th Hunger Games. Since winning, Haymitch has spent most of his time drinking to the point of embarrassment.
Harrelson recently starred in “Zombieland” and “2012.” He joins Liam Hemsworth (Gale), Elizabeth Banks (Effie), Stanley Tucci (Caesar Flickerman) and Wes Bentley (Seneca Crane) in the film.
Also joining the cast are Jeremy Marinas and Dakota Hood as the District 10 tributes.
“The Hunger Games” hits theaters Mar. 23, 2012.
