the filharmonic the sing off season 4 'The Sing Off' Season 4: Meet '90s obsessed guy group The FilharmonicTwo years after the last season of NBC’s “The Sing-Off” aired — and following the success of the movie “Pitch Perfect” and Internet phenomenon Pentatonix, who won Season 3 — a cappella singing is en vogue again. Zap2it spoke with each of the groups competing in Season 4. Up next: The Filharmonic, a group of talented male Filipino singers.

The Filharmonic, a group of all-male Filipino singers who formed just to compete on NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” are going old school. The twentysomethings were just kids in the ’90s, but their favorite type of music to sing is from the final decade of the 20th Century.

“We love Boyz II Men, Usher, Justin Timberlake. he’s the greatest thing in the world,” says Jules Cruz. Group member Niko Del Rey describes their style as “modern, urbanesque ’90s swag.”

The LA-based group formed after Avi from Pentatonix suggested that Jules, his buddy from school, should get a group together and try out. Although a bunch of groups formed specifically for the competition, Jules says the fact that people are coming together with a mission in mind makes for some really interesting arrangements. “I think the show is looking for a lot of fresh stuff, so it works really well if you get a lot of high-power singers together in one group,” Cruz says.

All of the guys perform on a regular basis, but singing on the show is a completely different experience. The coolest thing they were introduced to while shooting their first episode? “The pyrotechnics,” says Joe Caigoy. “The fireworks can fall on you and it won’t burn you! What are they called? Cold flames? The sparks from the fireworks can fall on you and you don’t feel it! It’s just a little spark.”

Hearing themselves on such a big stage is pretty exciting too. it’s so cool singing together and hearing each other, but when you’re on that stage with that sound system, it’s crazy,” says Niko. “It’s like the best concert you could ever perform in your life. Just hearing yourself and hearing everyone go crazy for you, it’s the best feeling.”
