On the final night of blind auditions for Season 4 of “The Voice,” things grew intense as new coaches Shakira and Usher were the only coaches with openings left on their teams, one spot each. As soon as former “American Idol” contestant Luke Edgemon took the stage, it was clear we were due for a war.

Luke, who also appeared on “Glee” as a Dalton Academy Warbler, explained that he’d gotten his start in the church and would often perform with gospel choirs wherein he was one of the only white people singing. After moving to L.A., not only did he try-out for “Idol” a handful of times and book his “Glee” gig (both of which he declined to mention tonight), he also sang backup for Mary J. Blige and Queen Latifah.

He performed a soulful rendition of Bonnie Raitt‘s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Both coaches, the only two whose chairs would still turn, waited a while to make sure he was worth turning for. Halfway through, Shakira decided he was and slammed on her button. Usher followed shortly after, his face displaying his shock that Luke was white.

Shakira laid it on thick right out of the gate, telling Luke, “I would be thrilled if I could have you on my team because your voice is phenomenal.” She also warned that all Usher had to offer was to teach him R&B, to which Usher replied, “No, I’ll teach you to be great, man.”

Shakira wasn’t going to let Luke go, though, prompting the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer to mock Usher’s nonchalant way of sitting in his chair. In the end, it worked. Luke chose to work with Shakira and Shakira proved that she wasn’t here to fool around. These two will be an exciting team.

What did you think of Luke’s performance, “Voice” fans?
