You might think A&E’s new cop drama “Those Who Kill” is another in a long line of crime procedurals. You would absolutely be wrong, though. While it might give off that vibe early on, it is clear that what the show is really about two very different people trying to find some sort of middle ground in an effort in order to solve some pretty horrific murders … and that’s before delving into their personal histories.
Chloe Sevigny’s Catherine Jensen is a homicide detective who is willing to break the rules if that’s what it takes to solve the mystery. She lets herself get too close and has a borderline obsessive and unhealthy relationship with her cases.
Luckily, she brings a forensic psychologist on board who has that same sort of obsession, though in a different way. Thomas Shaeffer (James D’Arcy) puts himself in the mind of the killer, trying to understand their motivation and tactics. Everything a killer does has meaning, and he wants to truly understand it all, regardless of how ridiculously creepy it makes him look.
The two of them together make a formidable, yet very dysfunctional, team. It’s still a bit early to tell how they’ll be in the long run, but there’s a spark of some chemistry between them that could be pretty good. They’re supported by the likes of James Morrison (“24”) as their commanding officer, but it’s clear who the featured actors are.
With so much serial killer programming on TV, like “Hannibal” and “The Following,” “Those Who Kill” could carve out its own little place. But it’s going to take some work. On the bright side, the show has Sevigny, who is the clear standout on the series. You believe she is tortured by her past and you want to figure out how to help her.
The real test for the show is going to begin in episode 2. While Monday’s (March 3) debut offers a good mystery and lots of action, along with a horrifying villain, it’s the end of the episode that sheds quite a bit of light on the direction of the series. If it can follow through on what’s promised, this may be a gem for A&E.
“Those Who Kill” premieres Monday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on A&E.
