After five years of hosting “The Today Show” alongside Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira is saying goodbye. She is leaving the show to spend more time with her husband and three children. Her husband Richard Cohen suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. It’s not a fatal condition, but it is degenerative and he has dealt with the condition since he was 25 years old (he is now 63). As Meredith says Wednesday morning (June 8), it’s hard to leave “Today,” but it’s the right thing to do.

Ann Curry, the current news desk anchor, is poised to take over for Meredith as co-host. Curry was passed over for the job when Katie Couric left ‘Today” five years ago and Meredith was brought in over Curry for the position. But Curry was never resentful or bitter about it.

“Sure, I had the sense of `I wish I had been asked,'” Curry tells the AP. “But shortly after that I said to myself, `Look how lucky you are. Look at what a great job you have and look how great she is.’ I opened my arms wide and never looked back.”

Curry also says she would not have left “Today” if she had not been named Vieira’s replacement.

“Why? Because it would have been nuts abandoning the broadcast. It would have been abandoning our viewers. I love our viewers. … I have a real sense of service when it comes to this job, taking care of the viewer and helping them have information that I think they should know and want to know,” says Curry.

Curry’s first day as co-anchor is Thursday, June 9. We wish her the best, but we’re going to miss you, Meredith!
