Is McConaughey's Oscar to blame?“True Detective” was expected to be one of Emmy night’s biggest winners, considering its critical acclaim, lead actors, Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson and it’s uniqueness to the drama category (as it probably should have been in the miniseries category).

So with the American crime drama only winning one out of the four categories it was nominated for, one has to wonder what went wrong in voters’ minds with the show that seemed so primed for award show success?

Let’s take a look at the one category it did take home, Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series went to director Cary Joji Fukunaga. This would have been the biggest snub of the night, had the good-looking, young director not taken home the trophy. His six-minute single take shot through a housing project in “True Detective’s” fourth episode was unprecedented and his win is beyond well-deserved, as people can’t talk about the series without mentioning it.

So why didn’t McConaughey or Harrelson take home a win for their acting work? The Oscar factor could be to blame. Since McConaughey walked away earlier this year with the best actor trophy for his role in “Dallas Buyers Club,” this could be a sign that Emmy voters aren’t quite ready for this type of movie star-driven, cinematic television.

But they were up against some stiff competition in Bryan Cranston, who has been nominated for the lead actor in a drama Emmy every year of “Breaking Bad’s” run but hasn’t won since 2010. It’s maybe not surprising he was honored for the final season.

As far as the HBO show not winning the best drama category, it would have been extremely hard to beat beloved “Breaking Bad” in its final eligible year and probably would have sent “Bad” fans rioting in the streets if “TD” had managed to snag the award.

What do you think? Was “True Detective” robbed at the 66th Emmy Awards?
