The premiere of “The X Factor” hit a bad note for FOX Wednesday, falling significantly from its debut last year. The show was down about 27 percent in viewers and 36 percent in adults 18-49.

(“The X Factor” had a two-hour premiere last year. Comparing Wednesday’s show to the first hour of last year’s, the drops aren’t quite as steep, but it was still off 17 percent in viewers and 22 percent in the 18-49 demo.)

On the upside for FOX, the finale of “Masterchef” scored solid numbers, building on its “X Factor” lead-in and scoring the best adults 18-49 rating of the night. “America’s Got Talent” and “Big Brother” were both down a little from a week ago, but the latter topped its timeslot across the board. NBC’s “Million Second Quiz” also eroded some more.

FOX (6.182 million viewers, 3.7/6 households) and NBC (6.177 million, 3.9/6) finished in a virtual tie for the viewer lead in primetime. CBS (5.9 million, 3.9/6) was not far behind in third. ABC came in fourth with 3.6 million viewers and a 2.4/4, and The CW (1.05 million, 0.7/1) trailed.

FOX did score a clear win among adults 18-49 for the night, averaging a 2.2 in the demographic. CBS, 1.5, edged NBC, 1.4, for second. ABC drew a 1.0 and The CW a 0.3.
