kylie bunbury avan jogia maddie hasson twisted abc family 'Twisted' premiere: ABC Family gets darker with new series, if that's even possibleWith the murders stacking up on both “Pretty Little Liars” and “The Lying Game,” it would hardly seem possible for ABC Family’s Tuesday night mystery lineup to get any heavier, darker or more brutal. Then along came “Twisted.”

Premiering Tuesday (June 11), “Twisted” tells the tale of Danny Desai (Avan Jogia), who’s returned home after a five-year stint in juvenile detention for the murder of his aunt — strangled with a red jump rope. (It’s not called “Twisted” for nothing.) Though he’s instantly branded an outcast, and understandably so, he attempts to reconnect with his two best friends, Jo (Maddie Hasson) and Lacey (Kylie Bunbury), which doesn’t prove so easy.

There’s a lot of mystery at play in the premiere: Why did Danny murder his aunt? Why did his dad disappear? Who killed that awful girl at her party? And who hired Denise Richards to play Danny’s mom? (That last one may prove most confusing, but is probably least-likely ever to be answered.) It’s a lot to cram into one hour — it may prove too much to tackle in even one season. And that’s not even including that final moment of the hour.

As the episode ends, we’re left with Danny alone in his room, holding the necklace the dead girl owned. The one he panicked over. The one that makes him look incredibly guilty. It’s an interesting tactic for a new series, and a risky one, to position its main character as its most untrustworthy one.

While the show is hoping to draw us in with its myriad mysteries, I’m more interested in how shaken Jo and Lacey have become by Danny’s return. The way these two girls, whose relationship disintegrated in the aftermath of their childhood trauma, have been forced back together is fascinating. As long as that emotional content isn’t overpowered by the central mystery, “Twisted” could prove to be another worthy summer sudser for ABC Family.

What did you think of the “Twisted” premiere? Are you in for the long haul?
