The upcoming “Veronica Mars” movie has broken its last record. With only a few hours to go before the end of its Kickstarter campaign, the project earned the crowd-funding site’s highest number of backers in history. As of this writing, the total number of backers had climbed over 89,000.
Ever since “Veronica Mars” series creator Rob Thomas began the campaign with the goal of raising at least $2 million to fund movie based on his beloved TV series, fans have rallied to provide support. The original goal amount was met within the first 24 hours of the campaign, and is approaching a total of $6,000,000 in pledged funding on Friday (April 12), its final day.
This is hardly the first record broken by the Kickstarter campaign. “Veronica Mars” currently holds the records for the most money raised on Kickstarter, the fastest campaign to earn over $1,000,000 and the highest-grossing pledge drive for a film project. Getting the highest number of backers was the final hurdle for the show. Previously, that record had been held by a gaming project: Double Fine Adventure had achieved 87,142 backers during its own Kickstarter.
Breaking the records and bringing the totals as high as possible has meant a busy month for Rob Thomas and actors Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring. New prizes, worldwide pledging and multiple video updates helped keep the numbers growing. The final video update before the end came from Veronica Mars herself — an impressive bit of dedication from Kristen Bell, a new mother.
When Thomas heard the news, he immediately took to Twitter to express his excitement:
“We did it! We did it! This is amazing! You all are amazing! My phone is vibrating non-stop. This is so much fun!”
Thomas followed this with an inside joke for fans of the “Veronica Mars” series:
“I love this idea of getting to 90909 and just pulling the plug! Man, I’m riding a high. What a great community of fans we have.”
How high will the campaign get before it ends on April 12 at 7pm PDT? Soon, we will all find out.
