dennis farina dies gi Dennis Farina of 'Law & Order' and 'Get Shorty' dies at 69Veteran character actor Dennis Farina, whose filmography included everything from “Law & Order” to “New Girl,” has died.

Farina, a former Chicago police officer, died Monday (July 22) after suffering a blood clot in his lung. He was 69 years old.

joined the Chicago police force in 1967 and served for 18 years. He had
a couple of small acting roles while he was still on duty and started
acting full-time in the mid-1980s.

He worked with director
Michael Mann on a number of projects, including his first role in
“Thief.” He also co-starred in “Manhunter” and appeared on several TV
series Mann produced: “Crime Story” (in which he played the lead role),
“Miami Vice” and “Luck.” Former “Miami Vice” writer and producer Dick
Wolf later cast him on “Law & Order,” where he played Detective Joe
Fontana for two seasons.

His other credits include “Midnight
Run,” “Get Shorty,” “Out of Sight”
and “Saving Private Ryan.” His most
recent appearances came on FOX’s “New Girl,” where he played Nick’s
(Jake Johnson) ne’er-do-well father.

Farina is survived by three children from a prior marriage, along with six grandchildren.
