taylor swift vmas song VMAs 2010: Taylor Swift sings ode to Kanye West while barefootWe’ll just preface this post by saying that we love Taylor Swift and have already pre-ordered her new album “Speak Now.”

But when the songstress took to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards stage to sing a condescending tune dedicated to Kanye West after his interruption of her Best Female Video win last year, we cringed.

She’s more known for her songwriting skills than she is for successful live performances, but Swift sounded good, save for a few pitchy, breathy moments. The problem wasn’t the performance but the content of the song.

“It’s okay if life is a tough crowd / 32 and still growing up now / who
you are is not what you did / you’re still an innocent,” she sang,
barefoot and wearing old-Hollywood pin curls and red lipstick.

Our hearts broke for her a year ago when she nearly burst into tears on stage, but now that time has passed (with Kanye mostly staying out of the spotlight) it’s time she grew a sense of humor about the whole thing. She should have gone home, had a good cry into her piles of “Fearless” money, bucked up, and moved on with her life.

Tonight, her performance was so melodramatic that we checked Wikipedia to make sure that Kanye didn’t run her over with his truck after he interrupted her speech. Nope. Still just crying over an interruption.

We’re pretty sure you’ll get another chance to accept an award someday, Taylor. There’s no need to condescend to another one of the most successful artists in the world by assuring him that he’s “still growing up” and “still an innocent.”

If we felt sorry for her before, we’re over it now. As she should be as well.
