More than 30 years ago, Oprah Winfrey was a virtual unknown, and who knew then she would go on to become one of the most famous and powerful women in the world?

Watch above as Oprah auditions for a morning show in Chicago that needed a new host in 1983. Her OWN network just posted the video to YouTube.

“I was obsessed with getting this job,” introduces Oprah, marveling that she doesn’t know how in the world she got hired. But she was hired as the new host of “AM Chicago” and within months had become the highest-rated talk show in the Chicagoland area. Eventually that show was renamed “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” began broadcasting nationally and the rest is history.
