wentworth miller comes out gay gi Wentworth Miller comes out as gay: 'Prison Break' star confirms sexuality, denounces Russian anti LGBT lawsWhile it had long been suspected, former “Prison Break” star Wentworth Miller publicly confirmed that he is, in fact, a gay man on Wednesday (Aug. 21), while rejecting an invitation to a Russian film festival over the country’s anti-LGBT laws.

In an open letter to the director of the St. Petersburg International Film Festival, which Miller had been invited to as a “Guest of Honor,” the actor and screenwriter says that, as someone with a degree with Russian ancestry, he would have liked to accept, “however, as a gay man, I must decline.”

Miller goes on to write, “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government. The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”

The letter, posted to GLAAD‘s website, was praised by the organization’s spokesperson, Wilson Cruz. “Wentworth’s bold show of support sends a powerful message to LGBT Russians, who are facing extreme violence and persecution: you are not alone,” Cruz says. “As people from across the globe continue to speak out against Russia’s horrific law, more celebrities and corporations should follow his courageous lead in openly condemning Russia’s anti-LGBT law.”

Russia’s controversial new law, implemented last month, bans “propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations around minors,” including the public discussion of gay rights and relationships. The law has sparked controversy worldwide, prompting many to boycott and protest in favor of a repeal.
