trophy wife not on wednesday tca Why isn't 'Trophy Wife' on Wednesday? ABC discusses comedy strategyFans of “Trophy Wife” have been wondering a couple things all season long: A) Why aren’t more people watching this gem of a show, and B) why won’t ABC move it to the post-“Modern Family” spot on Wednesday nights, where it would seem to be very compatible with its lead-in?

ABC Entertainment president Paul Lee doesn’t have an answer for the first question, but he did explain why “Trophy Wife” hasn’t had — and likely won’t have — a Wednesday-night tryout this season.

Lee says Friday (Jan. 17) at the TCA winter press tour that ABC wanted to try expanding its comedy footprint this season, which it did with “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife” on Tuesday nights.

“We really believe with ‘Goldbergs’ that risk has paid off on Tuesday,” Lee says. “It’s now beating ‘New Girl’ — I don’t know if it will for the season, but it’s showing muscular strength on its own. Even after a repeat [of its lead-in, ‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’] it does that, and that bodes extremely well for our ability to expand comedy on the network.”

“Trophy Wife” has pulled in weaker numbers, although Lee repeatedly noted how happy he is with the show creatively. He’s also, however, high on ABC’s midseason comedy “Mixology,” which is getting the post-“Modern” timeslot on Wednesday nights starting Feb. 26.

“We want to make sure it has a good chance of getting out there and doing well,” he says.

Lee implies that “The Goldbergs” has a very good chance at renewal, but he also gives some reason for “Trophy Wife” fans to have hope. ABC is making the show available on demand and streaming in hopes that people will discover it that way, and he says “it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that we can move that into Wednesday next season.”

“It’s got to raise its game in terms of numbers,” Lee adds, “but it definitely does have a chance of coming back, and I want to see it back.”
