Remember that scene in “Wild” where Reese Witherspoon’s character, Cheryl Strayed, in a fit of desperation after she loses one of her hiking boots in the wilderness, throws the other one over the side of a cliff? Well, that boot was still missing in real life until just recently.

Chris Kesting, a hiker well-versed in the Pacific Crest Trail Witherspoon travels in the movie, saw “Wild” and knew exactly where that scene was shot near Mount Hood. He figured it “might be fun” to see if he could go find the missing shoe — and he did.
Considering “Wild” shot in 2013, it’s impressive that it only took Kesting about 15 minutes to find the boot. “The thing that stood out was the red laces,” he tells The Oregonian. “The brown of the leather blended into the soil, and I didn’t see that at all. I saw the red laces and thought it was weird that there were flowers out already. That’s when it came into focus. It was kind of funny.”

Put away any doubts about the shoe’s authenticity, because “Wild” author Strayed confirmed it on her Facebook page.

“Someone found Reese’s boot! For real,” she writes. “And yes, the film crew adhered to leave no trace practices. They could not find the boot. I’m so glad Chris Keating did. What a funny story.”

Unsurprisingly, Kesting is keeping the boot — a woman’s size 6.5 Danner boot, made in Portland — as a souvenir on his bookshelf.
