Ed Sheeran will be starting out the New Year on a difficult note — with surgery on a badly-damaged eardrum.

The British “Thinking Out Loud” singer will take a break from his world tour, which is currently in New Zealand, to address the malady. But if you think it’s a work-related matter that comes with the job of being a musician, think again.

“I have to have an operation in January on my ear because I stupidly jumped off a yacht really high up and smashed it,” the 24-year-old singer tells Nova radio in Australia, explaining that the mishap occurred while he was on vacation in Spain. “I landed wrong and it burst my eardrum, so I have to go and get a graft, which means I’m not allowed to fly for a while — so it’s kind of good, it means I have to stay at home.”

Sheeran, who was joined on his tour Wednesday (Dec. 9) in Sydney by Elton John on a duet of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” says that he tried to ignore the injury at first. But when he attempted to go swimming again, he quickly realized that he’d be needing the attention of a doctor.

“It’s the most painful thing,” he insists. “Having a hole in your eardrum, and having water go in.”
