“Girls” star Lena Dunham has never shied away from saying exactly what she thinks on controversial subjects, and she is not holding back on how she really feels about Bill Cosby and his current legal issues.
On Dec. 30, Dunham tweeted this message to her 3.5 million followers:
Two minutes later, the 29-year-old actress added this message:
This is not the first time the “Not That Kind of Girl” author has been outspoken about her opinion on “America’s Dad,” but she also wasn’t aware of who Cosby was prior to the nearly 60 women that have stepped forward with sexual allegations towards him this past year.
“To me it’s interesting, because Bill Cosby is just a rapist,” Dunham says at a discussion with Judd Apatow at the New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center back in July.
“There’s a way that’s going to be twisted,” She continues, “I haven’t explored multiple avenues of culture because I’m spoiled, and Jewish, and I’m from downtown. I watched ‘Family Matters,’ I just didn’t watch Bill Cosby.”
Both Dunham and Apatow are struggling with the fact that people are trying so hard to keep the pristine image of Dr. Huxtable intact, even when evidence alleges that image is just a facade.
Dunham continued on to say, “I have people tweeting at me, ‘When’s Judd going to let it go with the Cosby thing,?’ I’m like, ‘when are we as a country going to let it go with the defending rapists thing?’ It’s not like he was really upset about the finale of ‘Breaking Bad,’ and he just can’t stop talking about it.”
Dunham once took things a bit too far, after she was asked if Apatow’s obsession with the Cosby situation was a little too much, to which the actress said there’s no such thing as too much interest for this kind of issue.
In the interview with Time Out New York, Dunham says, “It’s sort of like saying someone’s obsessed with the Holocaust. This is a huge issue, and it speaks to the way that we abuse power and the way that celebrity allows for injustice.’
Afterward, Dunham issued a public apology for the comparison.
Bill Cosby is currently free after posting bail, which was set to $1 million.
