Thursday (Feb. 18) marks the 62nd birthday of actor, dancer, noted Scientologist and pilot John Travolta.
Travolta first hit it big with his stint as Vinnie Barbarino on the television series, “Welcome Back Kotter.” It was around this time that his star quickly rose, finding him stepping into the lead roles in both “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease.”
However, Travolta found himself dwindling into obscurity B movie obscurity by the late ’80s. The “Look Who’s Talking” movies supplied him with some commercial success but it wasn’t until Quentin Tarantino tapped him to play Vincent Vega in 1994’s “Pulp Fiction,” that the world saw Travolta’s star shine bright once more.
Possibly taking a note from his appearance in the Tarantino film, which found Travolta sporting uncharacteristically long straight hair, it wasn’t long before the actor began appearing in public with notably different hairstyles.
In honor of the “People v. O.J. Simpson” actor, let’s take a trip down the beautifully odd John Travolta hair timeline.
1980 — The bowl mullet
Ah, the bowl cut/mullet look. Let’s be frank here, this shot was taken in 1980 and Travolta was king. Playing Danny Zuko in “Grease” can pretty much give any leading man carte blanche in how they wear their hair. Heck, if he walked around with a line shaved down the middle of his scalp, the ladies would’ve still swooned.
1981 — The natural wind-whipped look
Travolta was riding high in his career when this photo was taken. This was the year he appeared in “Blow Out” as Jack Terry. The sky is proverbially the limit.
1999 — The ’90s look
There is a notable jump in time from the last image to this one because, well, Travolta’s career sort of dipped into a no-fly zone after reprising the role of Tony Manero in “Staying Alive.”
Take a close look here, in this promo shot for “A Civil Action.” Travolta’s sporting the common spiked/bed-head look that became quite prevalent at a time of innocence, at a time before … Y2K.
2004 — ‘The Punisher’ look
It’s safe to say that when Travolta walked the red carpet with wife, Kelly Preston, for “The Punisher,” things were looking a little different. See anything wrong with the man’s hair? Preston’s face says it all, really.
Here, take a closer look …
Yeah, this is being dubbed “The Punisher Look” because whomever applied this hairpiece needs to be punished.
2013 — The painted-on look
Alright look, if you’re going to walk around sporting different hair pieces and the like, maybe it’s best to rethink the strategy if the Caesar cut is the style you want to go to next. Not for nothing, but it just looks like Travolta drew hair on his head with a marker. What. Is. Happening.
2014 — The don’t-get-into-his-van look
Nope. Nope. Nope. Nothing to see here, move along!
2014 — The make Idina Menzel uncomfortable look
Travolta was obviously going for the vampire Liberace look when he attended the 2014 Academy Awards. His steel gaze may have broken the camera if they lingered on his face too long. If you have a short term memory and need a refresher, this was the night that this happened:
2014 — The … wait, what is on his chin?
If that’s a goatee, someone needs to teach Travolta compromise. From one extreme to another, this just looks like an unfortunately large mole. It’s hard to notice though, since he’s wearing sunglasses. That last sentence is a lie.
2015 — The 3 a.m. workout look
John Travolta may be a celebrity but he also puts his pants on one leg at a time. Going about normal every day tasks is what he’s all about … like chatting up a stranger in a gym at 3 a.m.
Hey, at least he takes his hair off before getting in a good sweat. One can only imagine the cleaning job a Travolta wig would have to go through after hitting the elliptical for an hour.
Happy Birthday, John Travolta.
