In the spirit of embracing the Burning Man festival’s key components experimentation and self-expression, pop star Katy Perry threw caution to the wind and attempted her first-ever spin on a Segway. Unfortunately for her, she failed at keeping her balance, lost control and had to run to catch the electric vehicle. Fortunately for her fans, she had someone capture the experiment on video which she shared on Instagram.
“Obvious first time burner alert,” Perry, who is a first-time Burning Man attendee, writes in the caption.
Seasoned attendee Susan Sarandon was another celebrity face at this year’s festival. She led a processional in tribute to her friend and “father of LSD,” Timothy Leary. Although Leary passed away in 1996, Sarandon received and kept some of his ashes, which were spread and burned Saturday (Sept. 5).
The annual festival takes place over eight days in the Nevada desert. It is an experiment in community, art, self-expression and self-reliance to which USA Today reports nearly 70,000 people were drawn from all over the world. The festival comes to an official close on Monday (Sept. 7), though many Burners (the nickname for Burning Man festival attendees) will attempt to escape the annual hours-long traffic jam involved in the festival exodus.
UPDATE: Following Perry’s Segway fail, the pop star took to Instagram again to share a video of her dad showing her how easy it is to ride the vehicle.
“If you need any lessons, this is the way to do it,” he quips, even riding the Segway in circles one-handed. “A ha!”
